2009-2010 Poster & Essay Contests
Eight winners of Gillespie County
SWCD’s 2010 Conservation Awards were honored Wednesday, March 24, during the
annual Lions Club hamburger dinner. Over 80 people attended the event.
The SWCD encourages Gillespie County
students to enter the poster and essay contests each December. Winners
receive excellent prizes and earn respect from family and friends for their
accomplishments. Countywide, the Poster contest had over 100 entries, and the
Essay contest had 16 entries.
In the Poster contest, Claire Lukacs, daughter of Jimmy and Annette
Lukacs, won first place. Logan White, daughter of Jody and Nicole White took
second. Jacob Valdez, son of Ben
Valdez and Jeanne Ortiz, won third place.
Jordan White, daughter of Jody and
Nicole White, won first place in the Junior
division essay. Tres White, son of Glinn and Kelley White , placed
second.
Caitlin Schmidt won the Senior division essay contest. After receiving her award, she read her
essay for the crowd. Caitlin is the daughter of Chuck and Teppi Schmidt. Placing second was Katie Sawyer, daughter
of Blake and Karen Sawyer. Asiyel Smith,
daughter of Dorothea Smith placed third.

The POSTER Contest is for students age 12 or younger. There were two possible conservation poster themes: “Conservation
Habits = Healthy Habitats” and “Dig It!
The Secrets of Soil”.
The ESSAY Contest is divided into two
age groups. Ages 13 and under have a
maximum of 300 words, Ages 14 to 18 can be 500 words or less. The Essay
theme was “What Soil and Water Conservation Means to Me”.
Prizes
Engraved wood plaques for each of the winners were donated
by the Lower Colorado River Authority.
Security State Bank and Trust donated Savings Bonds for all the
winners. .
