Gillespie Prescribed Burn Association

Annual Fall Field Day was held October 5, 2006 at the Gillespie County Farm Bureau.  The program was provided by 7 different speakers and attendees earned 2 CEUs toward renewal of their private pesticide applicator's license.  Approx. 225 people attended the event.  Sausage wraps and iced tea were served after the program.

Program Details

Max Hartmann, Special Ranger with Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, talked about ways to prevent theft of your ranch equipment and livestock.

Dr. Bob L. Lyons, Texas Cooperative Extension Range Specialist, talked about new chemicals in agriculture, and when best to use them. 

Allen Ersch, Gillespie Prescribed Burn Association (GPBA), explained how prescribed burns can help control re-growth after brush clearing.  He also talked about a Prescribed Burn School to be held Oct. 16-20 in Fredericksburg.

Tom Hammer, with the USDA NRCS, spoke about the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). 

Melissa Grote gave an update on the Pedernales Brush Control Program. 

Dan Snodgrass spoke about the Nature Conservancy. 

Rick Neffendorf, with the USDA Farm Service Agency, explained the new Livestock Assistance program and talked about the County Committee elections.

The event was sponsored jointly by the Gillespie County SWCD, USDA NRCS, Texas Cooperative Extension, and Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI).   Gillespie County Farm Bureau provided the building facilities.
