Gillespie County, Texas

Past District Events

Plant Identification and Range Management Class is held each spring and fall. These photos are from the May 2007 class. Willard Dearing was the instructor, along with Tom Hammer, Charles Anderson, B.J. Lange, Phillip Wright and Jerry Turrentine.  The first day of class met at Fredericksburg High School.  The second day met at LBJ City Park to identify plants in the field.  Participants were also encouraged to bring other plants from their surroundings to identify.

During the May 2007 Plant ID class, a surprise drawing was held for 20 lbs. of Texas Perennial Wildlife Mix and Sideoats Grama.  The seed was donated by the Geistweidts’ Bar O Bar Ranches of Doss, Texas. Gene Rahe of Harper won the prize.

This class covered native cool season plants that were still green, plus early spring plants like wildflowers.  Students at Plant ID class learn to identify grasses, wildflowers, trees, shrubs and plants. They also learned how plants grow and studied plant food values for livestock.  The District co-sponsored the class with Fredericksburg ISD Continuing Education.
