GILLESPIE COUNTY SOIL & WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT #220
Gillespie County, Texas
Annual Fall Field Day was held October 1, 2009 at Usener Ranch, owned by Liza and Jack Lewis, Fredericksburg. Attendees earned 2 CEUs toward renewal of
their private pesticide applicator's license and about 125 people attended. Before field day, Willard Dearing, Decky Spiller, and Tom Hammer had identified 55 plants at the ranch and flagged them for Plant ID. During the hour before the program, participants toured the area and matched the flagged plants to a list that was handed out. Willard, Steve Nelle, Mark Moseley, and others assisted the participants during the plant ID.
The field day program focused on Prescribed Burning, Grazing Management, and Wildlife Management. We asked participants to bring their lawn chairs.
Jack and Liza Lewis gave opening remarks. Liza and Jack received Gillespie County SWCD’s Wildlife Conservation award in 2007.
Dr. Charles ‘Butch’ Taylor, manager of Texas A&M Experiment Station at Sonora, TX spoke about the Edwards Plateau Prescribed Burn Association and prescribed burning.
Steve Nelle and Mark Moseley, Range Management Specialist/State GLCI Coordinator talked about plantlife and grazing management.
The 2009 Fall Field Day was sponsored jointly by the Gillespie County SWCD, USDA NRCS, Texas Cooperative Extension, and Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI). We want to thank Liza and Jack for letting us hold field day at their ranch. Back to Gillespie Co. Back to main Past
