Program Details

Ricky Neffendorf, of the Farm Service Agency, talked about County Committee Elections.

Allen Ersch, Chairman of the Gillespie Prescribed Burn Association (GPBA), talked about considering the unusually plentiful fuel loads as part of a brush control plan.  On the other hand, the tall grasses that resulted from our extraordinary rainfalls made fine grazing this summer, but could be fire hazards in a dry winter.

Dr. Rick Machen, Livestock Specialist for Texas Cooperative Extension at Uvalde, gave a presentation on Beef Cattle and How to Get the Most for Your Investment.

.

David Oehler, Chief Appraiser for the Gillespie Central Appraisal District, explained the ins and outs of the property appraisal system.  His presentation covered the shrinking size of ranches in the area and the rising prices per acre for land sales.

The event was sponsored jointly by the Gillespie County SWCD, USDA NRCS, Texas Cooperative Extension, and Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI).  The Gillespie County Farm Bureau provided the building facilities.  Sausage wraps and iced tea were provided by the Gillespie County SWCD, Kiolbassa Sausage, JEK’s, and HEB.  The USDA NRCS, Texas Cooperative Extension, and the SWCD have hosted educational Field Days since 1979.
