2010-2011 Conservation Poster & Essay Contests

Twelve winners of Gillespie County SWCD’s 2011 Conservation Awards were honored Wednesday, March 23, 2011 during the annual Lions Club hamburger dinner. Roughly 90 people attended the event, including parents, teachers, county officials, SWCD directors, and NRCS staff.

The SWCD encourages Gillespie County students to enter the poster and essay contests each year. Winners receive excellent prizes and earn respect from family and friends for their accomplishments.

A whopping 108 posters were submitted in 2011 by students in Gillespie County. The possible conservation poster themes were: “Forests for People – More than You Can Imagine” and Conservation Habits – Healthy Habitats”. Since we had so many poster entries, we split them into two age groups to give the younger kids a chance to win, too.

Poster Winners, Ages 9 and Younger:

Essays

In 2011, the SWCD received 37 essays, more than twice as many as in 2010. The Essay theme was
“Why Soil and Water Conservation is Important to My Future”. There were two age groups.

Junior division, Ages 13 and younger:

Prizes - Security State Bank and Trust donated Savings Bonds for all the winners. Engraved wood plaques for each of the winners were donated by the Lower Colorado River Authority.
